Ingenio, in one capacity, refers to the kind of factory where sugar cane –Cuba's top export and most popular product – was produced.
After the emancipation of slavery between 1880 and 1886, the planters class in Cuba underwent a massive transformation. Accordingly, successful mill owners modernized their facilities, increased their cane-processing capabilities, and became planter-industrialists, creating “ingenios” all over Cuba.

Before West New York was settled, and long before it became incorporated in 1898, Native Americans of the Lenni Lenape Tribe, known locally to Dutch settlers as Hackensack and Tappan tribes, were the first known peoples to live here. The first known European in the area was Henry Hudson in 1609, an English explorer employed by The Dutch East India Company. In 1658, Peter Stuyvesant, the last Director-General of New Netherlands, purchased the land of North Hudson from the Hackensack and Tappan tribes.
The town was populated mainly with Italian Americans and German Americans. The 1960s saw an influx of Cuban émigrés to the area, once called Havana on the Hudson; it has since become one of the United States cities with a majority (80%) Hispanic population.
